Fable Trilogy and Copper Dog

The Fable Trilogy is an excellent series that uses a lighthearted story book aesthetic to tell an epic tale that involves you making decisions that truly impact both your character and the world around you. Filled to the brim with great humor, fun gameplay, a deep world to explore, this is a great set of games for both newcomers and experienced gamers alike.

Copper Dog is a great easy drinking blended scotch that pulls its flavors from the Speyside region of Scotland. Light and fruity with a little creamy sweetness, it has a lot of flavors going for it that will draw in a newcomer to scotch while also still interesting enough for an experienced scotch drinker to enjoy.

Nose:

-Game: The kingdom of Albion goes through vast changes as the series progresses. From idyllic rural towns and charming countryside fringed with dark and ominous woods, to heavily traversed trails leading to and from larger cities. It is probably the cities where you see the most change, particularly in Bowerstone. It transforms from a modest trading hub in the first game to an industrial age metropolis. Just based on the environment transformation alone, you almost feel that you’ve grown with the series. It almost brings up some of the feelings that you have in real life when leaving and coming back to your home town, seeing massive changes, filling you with a mixture of excitement and sadness at the progress. Fable nails the storybook aesthetic and utilizes it to lean into the classic tropes of the heroic fables (lowercase) that it is winking at while making the style unique enough that it is easily recognized.

-Scotch: This scotch leads with a fairly fruity and sweet aroma with big hits of vanilla coming through. This combination of scents is reminiscent of the aromas you might get in some of the more picturesque settings of Albion around the Oakvale area and meandering countryside, dotted with berry bushes and orchards. There is also a faint scent of wood, which brings to mind the trees of the forests you explore on your adventures.

Palate:

-Game: Each game starts you in a different place within the kingdom. Fable has you start as an innocent farm town child, Fable II starts you as a common street beggar/orphan with hopes of a bright and warm home, and Fable III begins with you as the brother to the current ruler of Albion. Each introduction shows vastly different lifestyles but with a common through line: you are descended from one of the rare lineages of Heroes! Each of these origin stories provides a different path and perspective on both Albion and the journey to becoming a Hero. The rural origin shows the loss of innocence as your town is ravaged by raiders and you must quest to rescue your sister; the orphan child loses all sense of safety and security with his sister’s death at the hands of the Lord of Fairfax Castle, seeking retribution for this injustice; and the prince story depicts falling from power and then using your Hero powers to overthrow your corrupt and power hungry brother. What stays common throughout these adventures is your character’s journey that explores and expands his powers and skills, from archery and guns to melee combat to the wide variety of spells you have at your disposal to dispatch raiders, balverines, hobbes, and even rock trolls. The combat flow improves in each game, not to say the first is not without merit, but there is definite refinement in the controls by the third installment. Beyond that you have a plethora of customization with your character through clothing, weapons, tattoos, hairstyles, fitness, etc. Your appearance can even be altered by your moral alignment, a more demonic or angelic appearance coincides with your decisions and interactions with the citizens of Albion. In some cases, you can even influence the appearance of the world around you, particularly in the third game where you are tasked with making decisions on investments throughout the kingdom.

-Scotch: When you get into the main flavors of Copper Dog, a lot of the same fruity and sweet notes are present that you got from the nose of it. All of these flavors essentially become more pronounced and gain more depth as you’re tasting it. Just as the gameplay more fully immerses you into the world of Albion through combat, working a job at a blacksmith or pie maker, interacting with other citizens, and countless other activities that integrate you into the world.

Finish:

Good or Evil, which kind of Hero will you be?

-Game: Fable is a highly custom experience that weaves a storybook tale through the humorous kingdom of Albion. Despite some minor technical shortcomings, you are left with a wonderful and memorable adventure that is tailored to how you want to play. There is so much you can do in this world it’s a little overwhelming. Quests, shops, relationships, marriage, children, build a real estate empire, work in a tavern, blacksmith, pie shop, lumber yard, or rule a kingdom. The world truly is your oyster in this series for how you want to play. Each twist and turn of the story will leave you delighted or frightened of genuine characters that you will meet on your journey. You will decide the fate of Albion and the world on your path to becoming a Hero. The only question is: good or evil?

-Scotch: This Scotch has a long finish with a slight smokiness from the peat on the end. You are left with a sweet aftertaste with just a touch of smokiness. Just like Albion, a picturesque land tinged with darkness threatening it’s borders.

I highly recommend both Fable and Copper Dog to newcomers and experienced gamers. Great flavor, fun experience, and memorable all around. Copper Dog is a great easy drinking whiskey that leaves you wanting to explore more scotches and whiskeys. Fable draws you in with its visuals and keeps you engaged with a great story and fun gameplay, along with a rich world that also beckons you to explore more. Filled with choices of good and evil, you get to decide what kind of Hero you will be and how will leave your mark on Albion.
